Pure Rawk Awards 06/07

Here is the moment that you’ve been waiting for. The Pure Rawk Awards 06/07 are closed and here is what you have voted for. Thanks to the 550 odd people who voted this time round! That’s an amazing result for a webzine and its five times more votes than we had for the 05/06 awards. Its been a fantastic year. Thanks to the fans, bands, managers, promoters, record labels and venues for making it as interesting and eventful as ever. Remember, without you lot we wouldn’t have anything to write about!

We asked each of you to leave your name and email address so that we could randomly chose a winner for entering the awards. Well done to Liam from London for winning the drink of the year (Jack Daniels), we’ll be in touch with how you can claim your bottle (and to nab some ID, we’re careful like that!).

Band of the Year

Camden’s Nothin To Lose may be currently without a singer but it seems that the fans and readers of Pure Rawk have spoken. After playing support slots with the likes of Buckcherry and Tokyo Dragons as well as selling out their own headlining shows they’ve grabbed the votes that make them the Pure Rawk Band of the Year. 1. Nothin To Lose
2. Jack Viper
3. King Lizard
4. Livid
5. Teenage Casket Company

Frontman of the Year

The whiskey drenched, raw vocals of Jack Viper’s Jay R seem to have stolen your votes. The top three seemed to flick between different positions each time we checked the voting but it seems that Jay R took the top slot in the end. (Image - Nix 2006)

1. Jay R (Jack Viper)
2. Flash (King Lizard)
3. Hilda (DrugdealerCheerleader)
4. Brad (Disarm)
5. Max Pornscar (Nothin To Lose)

Axe Hero of the Year

The Axe Hero award was one of the categories with the most votes in. By Axe Hero ... we mean guitarist (duh!). The high speed riff making talents of Mick Priestley from Nothin To Lose clinched the award. The top three were changing virtually every day so well done to Eddie Shredder and Niro Knox as well! (Image - Dany Serrano)

1. Mick Priestley (Nothin To Lose)
2. Eddie Shredder (Jack Viper)
3. Niro Knox (King Lizard)
4. Neil (Drugdealer Cheerleader)
5. Steve Paris (Livid)

Best EP/Single of the Year

Jack Viper’s Murder 1 EP is a four track tale of sex, sleaze, drink, drugs, infamy and depravity and you gave it the nod to win. Its available to buy from the Jack Viper website and also on iTunes. Drugdealer Cheerleader’s debut single “I Don’t Wanna Go To School” seemed to be right on the coat tails of “Murder 1". On release day, “IDWGTS” sold out in many retailers across the UK and is still going strong on iTunes. All of the releases that seemed to get your vote were top notch, especially the top five. Damn, you guys have good music taste.

1. Jack Viper - Murder 1 (EP)
2. Drugdealer Cheerleader - I Don’t Wanna Go To School (Single)
3. King Lizard - Late Night Dynamite
4. Teenage Casket Company - Eat Your Heart Out
5. Disarm - By Any Means Necessary

Drink of the Year

To be honest, it was almost a given as to what the rockers drink would be. Jack Daniels. However, it has to be said that pear cider (Koppaberg and Brothers) seems to becoming a fast favourite with you venue louts!

As for Uberstank ... we can only assume that it has something to do with the band Livid. Trust me, we’ll be following that one up - mightily intrigued.

So, in time honoured fashion, bring your bottle of Jack (and Coke if you fancy) and throw some bull horns to salute Tennessee’s finest product.

1. Jack Daniels
2. Koppaberg/Brothers Pear Cider
3. Uberstank (don’t have a clue what that is!)
4. Jagermeister
5. Carling

Best Album of the Year

What a year for releases! There were so many different albums mentioned of outstanding quality. But one stood out the most. Their debut album on RCA seems to have really pricked your ears hasn’t it? Bullets and Octane’s “In The Mouth Of The Young” ran away with the votes in this category. A year of heavy touring in support of the album has helped but it seems that one cannot deny its rampant hard rock quality. It has to be said that Roadstar’s debut album seemed to do pretty well in the voting as well. Both of those CDs have been playing in the Pure Rawk office’s CD player for quite some time. So much so that they’ve become quite anaemic looking! So we’re dead chuffed that they won.

1. Bullets and Octane - In The Mouth Of The Young
2. Roadstar - Grand Hotel
3. Backyard Babies - People Like People Like Us
4. Ginger - Valor Del Corazon
5. Towers of London - Blood, Sweat and Towers

Middle Finger Salute Award

This award is the more contentious of the bunch and it appears to have yielded some rather interesting results. The top four places have been a bit unsteady over the past few weeks and we now have a concrete top five! After the Download Festival line up was announced on Tuesday there was a surge in the amount of My Chemical Romance votes so we give this one (courtesy of you to) to Gerrard Way and company. Last years winner Pete Doherty bagged second whilst London glam sleaze rockers Red Star Rebels seem to have clinched the third place. For legal reasons, we are unable to print justifications for the rest of the votes that you stated. But, as the saying goes - all press is good press. At least people are taking notice!

1. My Chemical Romance
2. Pete Doherty
3. Red Star Rebels
4. Axl Rose
5. Emos

Stunt of the Year

Another unanimous one in the voting went to Jack Viper’s riot police incident which happened in Preston on the 4th October whilst they were touring with US Sex rockers, Slunt. After being ejected from the Preston Travelodge for partying too hard on the second night of the tour by fifteen riot police (and almost being arrested about 4 times) this rather ‘Spinal Tap’ moment seemed to get the salute from you. (Image - Nix 2006)

1. Jack Viper being ejected from a Preston Hotel
2. Kitty Hudson at Download
3. Lordi winning the Eurovision Song Contest
4. Izzy Stradlin turning up onstage with Guns N Roses at Download
5. Robin Black 2006 tour

Gig of the Year

Robin Black’s second to last tour date in London clinched the gig of the year. Sugar coated rock tunes with a rude and twisted edge came from Canada’s finest rockers with support from Disarm, King Lizard and Jack Viper. Playing tracks from Planet: Fame and newer release Instant Classic Robin “Fucking” Black and co stole the show, literally. Oh, and before you say ‘rigged’ to the second place vote - we had no part in that (but it was a bloody good gig ... shame on you if you weren't there)! But if you thought that was good, make sure you’re at the Purple Turtle on the 3rd April 2007 ... we’re presenting Trash-Stock London to you! Click here for more details.

1. Robin Black at the Underworld, London (15.04.06)
2. Pure Rawk Unleashed and Loaded CD Release Party at Purple Turtle, Camden (5.12.06)
3. The Answer/Livid at the Sugarmill, Stoke(11.12.06)
4. Kitty Hudson at Download Festival, Donnington (9.06.06)
5. Trash-Stock 06 Junktion 7, Nottingham (18th and 19th Aug.06)
